Sowing Columbine Seeds Now?

sureturtleSeptember 3, 2006

Hi, everyone:

Please help: can I sow Columbine seeds directly in bed now? or should wait later-- maybe after cleaning up the fallen leaves? Or, should I wait even more to Apr 2007 to sow them outside -- except then it won't be such fun considering the freezing temperature outdoors. I figure that since Columbine seeds need 3-4 weeks of coldness that I might as well let them have it from nature than in my refrigerator.

Thanks a lot for the help.

I look forward to the Swap at the Zenpotter's. It is on Sun, Sept.10, right?

I'm assuming they are the native species...just fine to do it now. For all my hardy seeds I direct sow in the fall, unless there's a compelling reason not to (seed needs to be planted as soon as it ripens, germination rate tends to be low, small quantity available, and so on).

I scattered columbine seed on a new area as they ripened on the plants earlier this summer. They have germinated so I have lots of seedlings growing. Go ahead and direct sow now. You could also save some seed to wintersow this winter.

Ditto. I sprinkled some on the garden earlier and they are coming up and I saved some for winter sowing.

Yes it is Sunday the 10th. I need to get in gear and get some plants in pots.
