Can anyone identify this flower?

I took these images in Joshua Tree NP last spring (2008) and can't find anything like it in any book I've looked in. Can anyone identify it?

(note: I believe that the color in the second image is more accurate - also, there's a bee on one of the flowers that helps give an idea of scale)

It is a native Salvia species, most likely the one linked below.
