Grasses - spreading or reseeding...or both?

well_drained(z6a MA)April 24, 2006

I have one grass (Bottlebrush - Elymus hystrix/Hystrix patula) and one sedge (Carex pensylvanica) growing in my so-far sparsely planted yard. I have started to notice grasslike plants sprouting many feet away from the grasses I planted, that look very similar. But I also remember that last year I had lots of path rush (not sure of scientific name), which I think is actually a non-native sedge (could be wrong). So that could look like the Carex pensylvanica. The bottlebrush grass is pretty distinctive, and I'm seeing something similar sprouting up at some distance from the ones I planted.

The question: Do these plants spread outward

from the original plant, or do they reseed all over the place or both?

Any information would be appreciated.

Bottlebrush spreads by seed, and I think sedges do too. In my yard, bottlebrush seeds itself all over. My sedges (not pennsylvanica) have not self-seeded.

Carex pensylvanica (Pennsylvania Sedge?) will spread to form a clump. In my yard the new shoots appear pretty close to the parent plant (within an inch) and probably wouldn't be mistaken for seedings. I am sure it sometimes does spread by seed but I haven't noticed any seedlings. Perhaps they look too much like other grassy plants for me to recognize them until they get large.

Juncus tenuis (path rush) is a native rush, found on paths, dirt roads, parking lots, etc. In heavy traffic areas it is usually quite short, but I think it can be a foot tall in better locations. In my opinion path rush is just as interesting as pennsylvania sedge, so i'd keep at least some of your seedlings.
