where can I (legally) scavange shale in Metro area?

treadlightlyNovember 10, 2013

I live in st Paul MN and would like to find a cheap or free source of shale to use for a fireplace. I see it in various places by the road in parks and such but dont want to take any, I dont think you can take from a park... so I am looking for alternatives.
Does anyone know of a place where I can find some shale? looking for sizes ranging from 4-12 inches.
Thank you!

Hi treadlightly,

I also live in St Paul.
What you want to look for is a basically a place where all debris is dumped after a construction project in completed.
Sort of like a construction site dump:)
Call Gertens and ask if they accept construction/contractor waste. I do know that they allow contractors to recycle old plants, pieces of sod, etc.
Possibly they also allow rubble/rocks.
Might not be free, but would be legal and very cheap.

Hope this helps!
