What type of vine is this (and is the bulb edible)

I was pulling some vines and I found this vine that had a bulb.

Was it a thorny vine? Looks like a type of Smilax.

Gee, I thought at first it was a bird! Smilax does have large, gnarly roots. It also has shiny dark green leaves, but it is one native I don't want. The thorns can be brutal.
