Northern Exposure Foundation Plantings?

thinklyAugust 15, 2010

I am re-doing our foundation bed on the North side of our house. We bought the house a year ago and don't care for the current design, especially the ugly edging. So I am starting over with metal edging, large egg rock and then of course.....the plants.

What to plant on the North side? I want to plant something fairly tall on the left side of the picture and then have a few smaller plants as you move towards the front door.

I very much want to keep this uncluttered and make the egg rock and landscape lighting visible for years to come. IOW, I dont want everything to get overgrown like most landscape plantings I see.

Between the light colored siding and the openness beyond, there should be enough ambient light there for just about all but the most sun loving plants. The only caveat is make sure either a) the bed drains well or b) whatever is planted in the corner can take water because of the downspout.
