recommendations for archway

courtney68May 20, 2010

I recently moved into a house that has a beautiful archway around the gate into the backyard. Currently the archway is formed by two redtips which are in the process of dying. We would like to replace them with some other small tree (20 feet or so) that can be pruned to form a similar arch. Any suggestions?

Red Buckeye (Aesculus pavia) is a nice small tree, though I am not sure how well it would respond to pruning to form an arch. Nannyberry (Viburnum lentago) has an arching branching habit that would probably do what you want.
