Indian story or legend about Sassafras leaves

WildflowergmaJune 7, 2013

This is a little out of the ordinary, but I am looking for an Indian legend or story as to why the Sassafras tree has different shaped leaves. My search online has not produced any results. It seems to me the story told about an Indian brave and a princess. I found one story online about an Indian brave wanting thumbs and his subsequent jump off a cliff, but that is not the one I am looking for. I have been helping with field trips for students at a local county park and would like to share the story with the children. Thanks!

Just as an aside, they're not 'braves' and there is no such thing as an Indian 'princess'. Please don't teach children untruths. We're busy battling these things as it is.

Its the middle of winter. So now is not the time to seek leaves. Contact me later.

FWIW Sassafras is a colony tree. I am still struggling with collecting a sprout with enough root to divide.
