This time, Claire, I clicked on the link and read a whole lot. Thank you. What a wealth of information! I found an article within the link about raising plants for/by Portuguese speaking people and places in MA where this is done. Now I know about the mystery plant a landscaper gave me, a plant called "jilo" which had leaves like an eggplant's and eventually grew a bright red lemon-size vegetable. And there are other Brazilian or Cape Verdean veggies available, if one knows where to find them. A weird cucumber that looks like a blowfish, for example. Interesting new foods.

OK, Carol, you intrigued me and I went digging into the Agriculture and Landscape Vegetable Program/ Crops section and there was jilo! (Actually, I cheated and googled "jilo" which lead me back to the UMass program.)

Have you grown it again? The site says Thompson and Morgan sells jilo seeds.

No, I grew that one plant last summer. We tried to eat it but I didn't know how to cook it or if we could eat it raw. Bitter! So we won't grow it again, but maybe the compost pile will...
