The Great Backyard Bird Count starts tomorrow, Friday Feb. 18 and runs through Monday, Feb. 21, 2011. The GBBC is a good way to get your mind off whatever is bothering you, and if the weather holds out will be a good reason to be outside. You can submit counts one day, two, three, or four days and submit separate counts for different sites (home, park, beach, etc.).

Watching the results come in online is always fun and you get to explore data if you like that sort of thing.

When I taught school, I would do this with my class and pool our results with another staff member. It was always a good excuse to be outdoors in February. One of my favorite memories is of watching a flock of over 100 crows fly over on a blustery day. The crows around here seem to enjoy playing with the wind. I could always find a few mergansers on the river as well.

I also have a favorite memory of a large flock of crows, although it wasn't during the GBBC. The flock was flying north with loud cawing, and some local resident crows flew up to join them, flew with them for a while and then dropped down again. The main flock continued north.

It felt like a short happy family reunion.
