Your plant is a Wintergreen from the genus Pyrola. It might be Pyrola picta.

Here in the US we call it Chimaphila maculata.

Ah yes, similar to Pipsissewa (Chimaphila umbellata) which we see often in the Boreal Forest region. I wonder if this plant mainly has a more Southern distroubution?

Does anyone know what distinguioshes members of the genus Pyrola from the genus Chimaphila?

The upright pods on Chamaphila vs. drooping on Pyrola are one apparently consistent difference.

Also the petals of Pyrola tend to be free to the base and in Chimaphila they are usually fused (connate) at the base. The leaves are all basal in most Pyrola while Chimaphila has leafy stems. And Pyrola are herbaceous and Chimaphila can be considered subshrubs because the stem is woody at the base.

Please forgive the spelling in my earlier post, must have been in a rush.

Thank you both for the detailed responses.
