What is this ornamental?

RipVWJuly 14, 2013

This plant is about 4 feet tall with purple trumpet-shaped flowers and is growing beside our church entrance. I was told several things (Mexican Petunia, Tiarella), but when I "Googled" these names, they do not match the picture. Any clue?

Its Ruellia brittoniana (Mexican Petunia). I think they call that one 'Purple Showers'. Its hardy to zone 7.

I got rid of it pretty quick after planting some. It has seeds that explode and they fly off pretty far, the distance scared the likes of me when I considered the potential. I looked it up and found out it can become a real pest. Lots of seeds.
