what the heck is this creepy plant

sugar_magnolia(z6 Hamilton, NJ)July 2, 2006

i went to the back of my shed to check on some skimmia seedlings and much to my shock, horror, disgust, there were these creepy growths coming up from the ground that were withered over and covered in flies. they sort of look like crabs legs rising up from the dirt, they are red topped and maybe 5" high, then the stem turns to white as it goes into the ground where is ends in a sort of bulb or sac. they are growing in bunches. anyone know what it is? i am totally disgusted by it and don't even want to touch it. ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

I had to google that one. There's a fungi worthy of exhibit space at the Whitney.
