Need an Evergreen privacy screen.

bonnieleetJuly 28, 2009

Hello all. My husband and I just bought our first home and are new to gardening. Our back yard is a blank slate. We want to create a nice private garden. We are looking for an Evergreen privacy screen along my fence on my property line. I need it to be about thirty feet long and no more than 6 feet wide. I really don't want to use arborvite and hemlocks are too big. I have been looking into manhattan (climbing) Euyonomous or cherry laurel. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Also, the fence is a split rail and 4 ft high so sunlight can get to all sides. The area of the yard is part sun to full sun. Shrubs, climibing vines, etc, all are considered. Thanks again, in advance.

The deer will eat the euonymous...at least they liked mine. Even if it's inside the fence, they'll jump pretty high to get to it. I have Cherry Laurel also and the deer have left it alone...one of my favorite plants. I have a couple of Nellie Steven hollies...no deer issues, fairly fast growing, and hardy. Also have some eleagnus(sp?) also known as Russian Olive. Some might consider invasive, but they're evergreen, hardy, and deer don't touch them. Good luck.
