Indeed, it is mandevilla. . .but,Anita, you might not
realize it's a tropical plant, that cannot winter over in
your zone 6 outdoors. However, you CAN winter them over
indoors - I have two of them, each in it's own large pot,
and just about first frost, I cut them back completely, and
tuck them into a dark, cool corner of the basement. After
all danger of frost has passed in May, back outside they go, always getting plenty of water and steady diluted
fertilizer. . .this has worked for eleven years now, the
first three on a rooftop in Manhattan, the last eight out
here in Monmouth County. They do take quite a while to
ramp up to blooming, the first flowers not appearing until
late July. . .but I'm told there are tricks to speeding
them up!

You mentioned that you bring your Mandevillas into the basement to overwinter the plants; can I also do the same by overwintering one in my garage? It must drop down in temperature to the 40's, what do you think as I do not have a basement. Vicki

40 degrees is ideal from what I read from another who overwinters it. The one time I tried it, flowers didn't come until fall but since Carl did so well, I might try it again. It is always nice to have something new blooming in August.
