Help: Ants mixed in my Sunflower Seeds!

SaveOurSeeds(6)October 24, 2013

I pulled all the seeds from my sunflower heads but one had ants and aphids which mixed in with the seeds. I want to germinate these seeds next year but will definitely not be eating them.

How can I kill the bugs but not the seed without spraying chemicals

Thanks you in advance for your help :)

I'd have thought the insects would have left by now. If not, put the whole shebang in the freezer for 2-3 days. After you take them out, make sure any condensation has dried thoroughly before packaging the seeds for storage. (If you want to remove the insects, a sieve would probably work ... probably best to do while still frozen, aphids are moisture-laden soft-bodied creatures and will probably be particularly mushy after thawing.)
