Seeking nicotiana/ smoke cuttings for research

tushinghamOctober 18, 2008

I am a UC Davis Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Anthropology and I am wondering if anyone can help me find cuttings of nicotiana and other smoke plants for a study I am conducting. In a nutshell, the study will attempt to determine the plants that native peoples smoked in pipes found at ancient sites in the Western US, using mass spectrometry and other analytical techniques.

I've found many of the plants I need, but to my surprise have had trouble finding nictotiana (the only one I have is glauca). I have seeds of some of these varieties and will grow, but I need a few samples to start the study. If anyone had any of these plants in their garden and were willing to donate a few leaves or a cutting for the study, I would certainly appreciate it! I will of course cover shipping or other costs.

Any native tobacco is of interest, except glauca, but I am specifically looking for:

*** Tobacco Nicotiana attenuata

*** Tobacco Nicotiana quadrivalvis

*** Tobacco N. quadrivalvis var. bigelovii

Tobacco N. quadrivalvis var wallacei

Tobacco N. trigonophilla

Also looking for:

*** Indian Celery Root Leptotaenia californica Nuttall

** Pine Mat Manzanita Arctostaphylos nevadensis Gray

** Wooly Angelica root Angelica tomentosa [S. watson]

*** Jimsonweed Datura stramoniumL.

Thanks very much and I'll keep you posted on how this goes.

I would suggest finding some greenhouse space and starting your plants from seed. It is a hard time of the year to get plant cuttings from gardeners except from possibly your southern most gardeners.
