time for pruning?

bostonrookie(5)March 17, 2013

Please let me know if I should post this to a more appropriate forum... but was hoping to get the advice from some other New Englanders.

I recently purchased a house in Bolton, MA that came with... surprise, surprise.. some apple trees!

Everything that I have read says that I can prune late winter or early spring... but I was wondering what cues I am looking for... weather patterns etc... that would tell me that I should prune now... or whether it is too late.

The trees are mature and it looks like some have been cared for but an number have been neglected over the years.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Any time in late winter/early spring before their leaves have appeared is fine. Right now is a great time to do it. I was pruning a few things yesterday and I'll continue to so for the next few weeks.

I agree. Now is the perfect time to prune. Remove broken, crossed or damaged branches, including any that appear to have insect damage, and also any 'watersprouts' from the base or larger branches. These are the ones that are straight up and long, and generally look all 'new' rather than old bark. Best of luck with your new home and garden!
