What flowers grow in Nevada during wintertime?

glennrfDecember 1, 2006

I was wondering as to what flowers I could grow outside during this winter time. Not use to this environment. We have a place outside just outside of Vegas.

Thanks for your help.

I assume--pansies and primroses might do okay. Heck. They overwinter up here in Sparks, and bloom any time the temps lift from arctic to merely freezing. They will melt out and then die come spring/summer, though.

Snapdragons & violas too besides pansies...I'm out in Pahrump. Nothing looks good these days after the latest winds and freeze.

The plants recommended by Lisa and Beca do great here in L.V. in the winter. I especially love violas and always put some in a pot to add some color. Stock, Cyclamen, and Kale also do very well here in the winter and add a lot of color.

Personally I'm not much into annuals so for my winter interest I have the everblooming Hymenoxys acaulus that is never out of bloom, paperwhite narcissus which is blooming now and aloe sinkatana which is a winter bloomer. Also the Australian Cassia bushes seem to like blooming in the winter so long as it is not so cold as to damage them. The cactus Opuntia Violacea gets a beautiful purplish color to it in winter as does the purple hopseed bush.

Of course the casinos always have great flower displays so just going by and looking at them can be inspiration of what works.
