Are there Arboretum standards?

gardener_guy(6)January 18, 2011

A cemetery from the early 1800's in Ohio wants to become an arboretum.

What are the rules that need to be followed? Is there a board in Ohio or the US that sets the rules/standards for becoming an arboretum? Is there a place/website to view these standards/rules?

Thank you to all who can help,

Gardener Guy

All depends on how involved the staff wants to get in becoming an arboretum. If it is just to identify and label their plants with botanical and common names and be open to the public - anyone can do that. But if they want to become a accredited museum quality arboretum there is much more involved. They might want to contact either Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati or Ferncliff Cemetery in Springfield for some further guidance.
