Astilboi? Large Leaved Plant

fancyfree2March 11, 2012

I started to cast leaves in concrete last year and I'm looking to add large leaved plants to my garden. I had come across one last year that was hardy in Minnesota but now I can't find the right name to order it. I thought it was called an astilboi? It reminded me of astilbe. I know there were very few places that sold it. Anyone know the name of the plant? It was very large leaved, I think it grew in the shade and, as far as I know, it was hardy and did not need to be brought in every year. Thanks!

I think you are referring to Astilboides. It took me a while to remember the exact name...LOL. But I knew that what you wrote was close to something I remembered! What really surprised me was that when I tried to google your spelling, the only thing that would come up was astilbe, and not the closer spelling of astilboides.

Here is a link that might be useful: Astilboides tabularis

A terrific plant to use for casting leaves, especially for 'water catch basins' is Ornamental Rhubarb. mine is hardy in zone 4 and the leaves are huge!

Last year I used rhubarb, cabbage, and broccoli leaves for my castings. The rhubarb and cabbage were the largest.
