Daphne's winter plight

jillyluis(6A)May 14, 2014

Hi, Sorry, another question about Daphnes. How do they do over the winter?? I am thinking this winter they lost their leaves, based on what I saw at the garden centers.

In general are they evergreen? A lot of places they are listed as evergreen, but others say the foliage lasts part winter. Do they look okay when they start growing again (the ones I saw looked kind of weird as the leaves were coming in but I may have just been tired and grumpy....or the Daphne was)

Thanks a lot

My Daphne 'Carol Mackie' is not evergreen; it loses its leaves each fall. New leaves emerge the following spring when temperatures begin to warm up. It's beginning to bloom now where I am.

Daphne may be evergreen in warmer climates but not in Z6a.

I purchased my shrub from Bluestone Perennials in 2010 and planted it in part sun on a slope north side of my house based on planting recommendations from the nursery. My soil leans toward acid.

I think D. 'Summer Ice' will be fairly evergreen for you since it sometimes is for me, though sometimes it loses most of its leaves.
