New Peony

Thought I'd share this first bloom from my new peony. I picked it to group with a 'Sorbet' and a reddish purple one I can't remember the name of so I would have two solids and one with both colors. I planted it last year and got no bloom so I've been waiting a long time for today :-)

That is incredibly lovely.
Peonies are my very favorite flower.
The fragrance is so other-worldly.

So what do you do for yours to make them so full and perfect?
Had a pt who used to put the ashes from his wood fireplace on his peony beds all year.

Ever heard of using ashes for mulch?

I just fertilize with Terosa. It works so well on my roses that I started using it on all my perennials. Other than that, I just use H2O :-)

Here's a pic of the other two in that grouping from last year. The sorbet is a bit faded, it opens more peach and mellow yellow in the center.

How do you keep your peonies from drooping? Mine seem to fall over from the weight of the flowers.

Hi Lisa,

I just use tomato cages and make sure that most of the new growth either keeps getting tucked in or is green velcro taped to a stem that is. Once they start getting taller than the cage I take a long skinny bamboo stake and run it vertically inside the cage and velcro it to the cage and then velcro a grouping of stalks to each stake. The foliage is so thick, you never see the tape. It seems that as long as I keep the stalks vertical and don't allow them to get accustomed to the outward lean, they have no problem supporting the flower head even when wet.
