Alternative to lawn

I'm a bit discourage here. I'm living in Yukon (southern area) and I try find a good eco-friendly lawn alternative. I found the "Trifolium repens", but I have seen that is die under -30 degrees (and here we have some weeks of -30 to -40 every year). Did someone here have another solution?

Probably mostly fine in the Yukon as your coldest temperatures are usually associated with an insulating blanket of snow. The catch...snow is not guaranteed and you clover would be severely damaged (or killed outright) if it had to deal with
