What kind of fertilizer should I use on my hostas? Some of them just look as if they need a little nourishment.
Scratching my head about mine. Still so small. I`ll just be patient. Lorraine
Some of mine are nice and large but a few of them are tiny and in the same area so I thought maybe they need some food.
Look into alfalfa (meal or as a tea) in combination with fish emulsion or by itself. If you search on the internet, lots of hosta societies and even on the hosta forum have had discussions about this. HTH
Thank you Mary Anne for the info. I have looked up the hosta forums and found the recipe for alfalfa tea but am not sure how often to use it. I have it now brewing in my garage and will feed all of my hostas in about 3 days. Do I use it again this summer or is it only a one time thing every season?
Hosta generally don't need much if any fertilizer, just lots of water, water, water and more water. If you want to amend the soil, compost is good.
How old are the plants? There's a hosta saying: the first year they sleep, the second they creep, the third year they leap.
Most of them are over 3 years old, but I have a couple that are 2.
I just fluff a little bonemeal and epson salts around my hostas each spring and they love me for it:)
