What are gooseberries? And how do you eat them?

Gooseberries are sweet and smooth berries. I enjoy eating them off the bush. Pies, jelly, and jam are popular uses. My bushes are loaded with fruit this year. Before the dry hot weather I had issues with slug damage. Now I am enjoying loads of ripe perfect fruit.
