Flowering sequence from buds. Tentative Id.
Stanhopea graveolens. Orchid growing outside all year as a garden plant. Flowers in Summer.
Looks huge. Your summer/our winter. It looks very healthy, with so many blooms.
Looks like S. graveolens to me. I used to have one and managed to bloom it a few times. This plant has an overwhelming smell of moth balls (naphthalene) to me...and very medicinal. One inflorescence of 5 flowers would fill my house with the smell.
BN thanks for the support of the ID. Not my orchid, the owner has various types of Stanhopea growing in her garden. Moth balls! Yuk.
Inga, these are big plants and are not often seen at orchid society meetings due to the difficulty of carting them about without damaging the flowers.
Whatever Stanhopea it is, it is lovely.
