Oeceoclades maculata

ifraser25(z11 Brazil)March 9, 2008

I volunteer this as the orchid with the most difficult to spell/ pronounce name! Oeceoclades is one of a group of mainly African terrestrial orchids called Eulophias, distantly related to Cymbidium. This species is the only one found in S America, though it is relatively common in both continents. It has an attractive mottled leaf. Very easy, will grow in most well-drained garden soils. About 15cm (6") tall.

And it grows wild in southern Florida, although much of its habitat is being paved over as the urban sprawl continues.
The foliage is lovely and it adapts well to life in pots.
You can find it growing in Trinidad and Venezuela, where it is considered a weed.
