Dendrobium normanbyense

Greencurls(Z5)March 24, 2013

This was called a Den. atroviolaceum pygmy a couple of years ago. Now it is its own species. It is about 8 inches tall making it a great little plant. The purple on the lip is almost florescent but I could not seem to capture it with my little camera.

Those bearded boffins with PHDs decide sometimes that an orchid species needs a new name and Doctor Google is in complete agreement because a search gives lots of hits on Dendrobium normanbyense.

But another group of boffins have to agree otherwise the new name doesn't get a mention in the World checklist of selected plant families kept at Kew.

The naming and renaming is ridiculous to try to keep up with. I have both tags in the pot waiting for some decision as to whether or not this small variety is really a distinct species. Ugh!

In the meantime, I am enjoying it in full bloom. All 13 blooms are now open.
