Kirchara Tropical Jewel 'Hihimanu'

clintdawley(z8 TX)May 31, 2007

Got this one two years ago from EOoM. It has quadrupled in size for me since then. First time blooming. One spike with 6 flowers and two more spikes coming along. Strangest thing with these plants is that they bloom from the tiny new growths. Just as the leaves pop open from the newest p-bulbs, you can see the tiny buds inside. No sheath...

Those blooms are just gorgeous! Definitely worth waiting for..nice, healthy plant, too. Do I see some buds in the new growth, right hand side?

Carol,

Thanks! Yep. You can see the buds in the right hand side growth. The left hand side growth also has buds, but they're facing away from the camera (and slightly smaller).

Stacy,

About 7". Not very tall at all. I would say this one is a definite mini-catt.

Really nice, Clint. Some of my bifoliate catts bloom that way - no sheath, just buds popping out between the two newest leaves.

Cool, Marci..

I think the blooming of this plant is heavily influenced by the Epi. stamfordianum parent.

Clint, I just re-read your post, and decided I should have had more coffee this a.m. You did mention those other spikes!

Yesterday I noticed spikes on my Ctna. Jamaica Red Rum and Blc. Hsinying Catherine. Must be spike week for us!

Clint,
I found this plant currently listed on ebay and saw that you had posted about it back in May. Does yours stay outside in our summer heat and do well? Perhaps I should bid on this baby!

That really is a Jewel. What is Kirchara exactly apart from Catt and Epidendrum ?
