How to harden off Coleus???

seedmama(7)April 27, 2012

In the past I have seeded Coleus directly outdoors. By the time I have plants of size, it's almost time for frost. This year, I started them in my 288 cell flats under lights. All is going well. However, I'm not sure how to harden them off, since they are a shade plant. Do I tote them back and forth to the hot shade for a week, just for the wind exposure, or will they be okay if I plant them directly in the shade?

I would put an oscillating fan on them. First just 5 minutes on low... building up to a 6 hour period with medium and high speeds tossed in.

Moni makes a good suggestion. Oklahoma wind can be brutal to tender seedlings. Also, Coleus is in the group I consider tropicals, so until it's been hardened off a bit I wouldn't leave it outdoors overnight until the night temperatures stay above 50....Maryl
