Seed Starting

dirtguy50 SW MO z6a(6a)January 14, 2013

What are some of the seeds being sown indoors in our region now. This is my first attempt at seed starting and don't want to start too early. I did set out a couple of winter sown seed container outside just as an experiment. Thanks everyone and hope it warms up in the next few days to get rid of some of this ice.

You can do all the wintersowing you want and this the time because a part of winter sowing is getting through winter mentally sound. I always start seeds too early. I am trying to hold off as long as I can because plants in the house are hard to keep happy for long. If you grow coleus from seed you need to start now. Otherwise I think it is too early. I will probably start something in Feb. but if I do that my tomatoes will be so big that watering is an issue and they get floppy and shade each other. Tomato and peppers are what I usually start inside; late Feb. early March is probably a good time. Some flowers with tiny seeds need to be started early. Glenda would know when to start cabbage and things that can stand the cold.

Rare Seeds has a planting guide on their site for when to start, according to zip code. Cabbage etc says Feb 8

I go by the seed pack that tells you how many weeks before last frost for my particular area. I like to just give the tomatoes 6 weeks, not 8, so they don't get so big.

I do have a plant light stand that holds 12 trays (10x22) so light isn't
a problem for me. Also the porch stays pretty cool.

Snaps can be started pretty soon. They take a long time and can stand the cold outside.

Here is a good website. You can pick your location on the map and take it from there. Hope it helps. If you have any questions, feel free to ask us.

I start my heirloom tomatoes and chili peppers around Super Bowl time or a bit later. My plants were ready to set out after a month last year, but it was warm so early I got about a month headstart. I've got lights on chains and raise the chains as the plants grow. As it warms, I start potting them into larger peat pots and leave them outside, weather permitting. I don't have much sun, so I'm good until the trees leaf out. I garden in a sunny community garden not far from my house.

The top of my refrigerator has cups of tomatoes that haven't come up yet. I'll work on my basement today to get my lights and shelf ready.
