This is not one bit about gardening but I am excited to tell it. My father escaped to Australia in WW II and a book was written by the skipper about the long boat trip carrying 18 sailors. This old book out of print book has been reissued and is on Amazon. My father is only mentioned a few times in it. One of them was about him wishing for ice cream. After I left home and he was retired he had a big bowl of vanilla ice cream in the evenings and the dog also got a bowl at his feet. When he was in the nursing home before his death and had dementia, the nurses were giving him double ice creams. He never ever talked about the escape. I found out after his death from my cousin that he had suffered a head injury when Corregidor was being shelled. We wonder if that contributed to his dementia the last two years of his life.
