Mold from the Soybean Meal

aman32(6)June 7, 2009

I put down about 15-20 lbs of soybean meal per 1000 sq ft about a 1.5 weeks ago. We have gotten a lot of rain recently and most of the meal has been eaten up by the soil. However, there are some parts where the soybean is still on the surface and its turning into a mold. Should I do anything about this?

Short answer is no. 14.4 lbs per 1000 sq ft yealds 1 lb N per 1000. 20 lbs is a little heavy. If there were little piles of SBM here and there then you may see some mold and smell some stink until it is more fully decomposed. Do nothing but sharpen the blades on your mower. You are going to have a thick green grass to mow soon.

Bill -

I saw in some of your postings that you live in the Lansing area. I work in that area now and would like to know where/what stores you recommend for Soybean Meal and other organic products?
