Lime/fertilizer/overseed timing

piedmontprideJuly 9, 2012

I got a soil test done through my local coop ext and with a pH of 5.2 I am slowly raising it via calcitic lime. My first application was on 7/5.

I would like to switch to organic fertilization and have settled on alfalfa pellets unless I can be reasonably swayed to a better option. I'm wondering:

1- how long, if at all, I need to wait after liming to spread the alfalfa, and...

2- how long, if at all, I need to wait to lime again after spreading the alfalfa.

I also will be aerating and overseeding in the fall, therefore:

3- are there any issues with aerating, overseeding, liming, spreading alfalfa, and dressing with a thin layer of compost all at the same time? Do any of these steps need to be separated out and/or is any of it a bad idea?

Thanks in advance for the help, I've been lurking on these forums for a while and it's always great stuff on here.

If soil aeration is necessary that should be done before applying either the lime or nutrients. Many sources today do not seem to think there is a problem with applying lime and fertilizers at the same time, while the University of Connecticut suggests a 2 week time lapse between.
Many years ago I can remember disussions about not applying lime at the same time as manure because if you did then more of the Nitrogen from the manure would be released to the atmosphere. Never mind that the odor was always present. However, there are chemical reactions in the soil that we still do not fully understand, so caution may be warrented.
