long black snake

sammy zone 7 TulsaMay 11, 2011

I saw a long black snake in my yard that had yellow markings. It looked like they were on top instead of bands around it. It really startled me. I tried to look up snakes in Tulsa, and Google took me everywhere. I am guessing that it is a form of a king snake maybe, but I think king snakes are too big. I don't see anything right here to indicate the size, but it was smaller than when I hold my index finger to my thumb.

Do any of you happen to have access to a reliable picture of snakes in Tulsa? It probably came up from the creek, so we have maybe a few more critters than most people in Tulsa -- critters like armadillos.

The website I've linked is not unique to the Tulsa area but is just a general website for the snakes of Oklahoma.

You'll likely find "your" snake on it though.

speckled kingsnake? just guessing, but they are very common in NE Oklahoma. Very docile. Only other large black snake around here that would be common is a black rat snake. Not sure you'd see much in the way of yellow markings on that one though.

I think it could be an easter garter snake. They are black with parallel yellow stripes. They are common in this area, I used to catch them all the time as a kid.

It's a black ratsnake. Thanks for the links.

The black ratsnake has different coloring patterns, but one is just like what I saw.

Thanks for your help.
