Pruning a parlor palm

scallionboyJanuary 19, 2008

I have a neanthe bella which, after a couple of dormant months after I brought it home, has started to grow. Some of the "fronds?" are getting too high for the small window where the plant currently resides. If I cut these back, will it harm the plant, or will it encourage it to be bushier??

Many thanks.

Just how tall is tall for your plant? How small is that window? I am curious for the answer, as I just bought a pot of tiny parlour palms, and separated the 8 plantlets, into 3's and some singles. My knowledge of this particular plant is it doesn't grow much taller than 36 or 40 inches indoors, and will not branch out or regrow should you 'pinch' back or cut the top off. If you just cut off your taller fronds...I think you won't like the look of him.

It's only about 14" tall, but I've put it in a small bathroom window glazed with frosted glass. The window frame is only about 24" high. I guess I'll just leave it alone for now and see what happens. I can always move it to a bigger window, I guess.

If you cut the top of a palm off, you will kill the plant. There is no way to make a palm get bushier by trimming it. That's why they often cram lots of plants together in one pot. I agree that if you trim off the top fronds, it will look odd.
