An end and beginning for my rock garden

alisande(Zone 4b)July 4, 2005

There's a wedge-shaped slope at one end of my porch that I maintained for years as a rock garden. It was a struggle! Eventually the weeds proved to be stronger than I, and for several seasons I gave up completely. Then an old rose planted nearby began to send suckers into the rock garden, and that gave me an idea. This year I planted three groundcover roses on the bank, hoping they'll spread as advertised. It won't be a rock garden anymore, but if all goes well it'll be pretty. Some of the weeds (they tend to gloat) are visible in this photo, but the milkweed atop the terrace (to the right of the pot of petunias) were left there on purpose for the butterflies. The antique rose is shown at the left of the photo, and two of the new roses (White Meidiland and Carefree Marvel) are at the right. Our old stone ice house is in the background. Susan
