Tree peony that won't flower

averil(8b)February 16, 2014

Hi folks, I'm after some advice if possible. I have a tree peony that I planted in a large pot two years ago. It grows nicely but I've never had a flower.mi give it bonemeal in spring and top it up with miracle grow through the growing season. Am I doing something wrong or should I be giving it something else.
It's in a south facing garden and gets sun all day. Thanks for any advice
Kind regards

Tree peonies don't like fertilizer that is high in nitrogen (Miracle Gro, 10-10-10). They prefer low nitrogen fertilizers like Neptune's Harvest or a fish/seaweed type fertilizer (5-10-5). And only once in the spring following bloom, once in the fall prior to dormance, and once in the spring when growth starts. Otherwise, is the plant happy in a container? They also don't like too much water. A little goes a long way.

Hi Grayc. Yes the plant seems to like it in the pot. It grows nicely enough, just doesn't flower.. I shall take up your advice regarding feeding. I'm always a bit hit and miss with that, because I find it all a bit confusing. I shall post a pic if it flowers this year
Kind regards

If the plant is growing well otherwise, then just be patient and wait. It will be rewarded.

It takes awhile for tree peonies to get established. Can I ask how big was your plant when you planted it? Sometimes if you start with something small like a one year or even a two years grafted plant, it may take up to 3 years for the peony tree to bloom.
