Shifting peonies

I have noticed the last 2 years when cleaning up around my peonies there is an empty spot in the middle. Is this because they are old plants(over40 years)?

Yes. It will be a big job to dig and divide your peonies but will be worthwhile. You need not do more than one or two a year. To be able to work on the soil after you have removed the plant, adding compost digging it in. I have some here that need the same treatment, but will wait until I have some help. I know I will have three or four large divisions I will need to relocate or give away. Al
