Peonies for the South Project

maifleur01April 28, 2009

I have posted this before. Auburn University received peonies from a grower that moved to the northwest. Each year they publish a list of peonies that do well in Alabama. There is little reason to think that the peonies listed would not do well along the Gulf Coast.

Many of the peonies are Chinese tree peonies but there are several herbaceous ones. There are two growers in Pennsylvania and one in California that grow the Chinese tree peonies. The Chinese tree peonies seem to need a period of 1-3 years to adjust to my growing conditions if purchased from China. The Chinese growing area is generally warmer than this area.

It appears that the link to their suggested peony list is incorrect on their web site. Here is a good one.
