Supports causing black spot?

stephf(5a)May 9, 2011

Last year was the first time I used supports for my peonies (I used tomato cages). It kept the blooms off the ground and they looked fantastic! Last year was also the first time my peonies experienced black spot. Is it possible that the two are related? It kind of makes sense to me that they would be considering I'm bunching the stems of these fairly large plants together in order to be held by the support, which would reduce air circulation. I liked how the peonies looked with the supports, but it's not worth it to me if it means they will get black spot. I would like to get to the bottom of this asap because it is still early enough for me to remove the supports if I have to. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I think bunching the peony plant into a tomato cage would very likely cause a loss of air circulation and increase the chance of developing fungus diseases. I use grid supports with none of those problems. Al
