True that peonies are gopher proof?

I was told that gophers wouldn't touch peony roots, and I'm wondering if people find that to be true.

They don't eat mine. However a new plant may have the roots so exposed to the air of a gopher hole it may not survive. Al

Nothing has ever bothered mine, except some get a fungus late in the season (about August), so I cut them off and put out with the garbage. Usually by then the deer eat them off anyway (fall browse). Then next spring they look great again and full of blooms.
