Tree crops in zone 4

David_Vermont(z4 Vermont)January 24, 2003

Anybody here growing nut trees in zone 4? I have the following:

Turkish Tree Hazel

Buartnut

Black Walnut

Bur Oak (selections for low tanin levels)

American Chestnuts

I thinking of planting some grafted Shellbark and Shagbark Hickory cultivars.

Butternuts are being killed off locally by a disease. My buartnut is a butternut-heartnut cross that is resistant.

Here on pei I have been experimenting for 5 years with many different nut trees including all the ones mentioned by you the ones that are borderline here would be carpathian walnut, mullberry[red],northern pecan and hardy almond. Ihave had limited sucsess with these fellows, asthey seem to get tip-burn ,however I believe this can be adjusted by giving them lower N compost and changing their micro site to a higher slope
