Is this a fernleaf peony?

brodyjames_gwJune 30, 2013

I usually hang out on the Cactus and Succulent forum, so I am a new poster here. Can anyone id this plant?

The blooms are usually a little fuller, are magenta in color and normally "sit" atop the bush. This particular bush is tiny, but if I remember correctly, the bush can get 2-3 ft. tall and 2-3 ft. in diameter. The normal bloom is about 4 inches in diameter.

Could it possibly be Paeonia tenuifolia?

The thicker leaves may mean that this is a hybrid version. There's a subspecies with this type of thicker foliage as well. I read up on these recently as I saw some marked as a fernleaf for sale at a greenhouse this spring, but it had the thicker foliage like you show here.

I ordered several fernleaf hybrids this spring, won't get them until the fall, but the leaves look much like the foliage in your pic. The size seems pretty much right, too--a lot of the catalogs advertise them as rock garden peonies due to the smaller size.

Looks nothing like tenuifolia to me. More like P. anomala or a hybrid of it.

I grow several different species P. tenuifolia clones and yeah, the photo is definitely not a species tenuifolia. It is probably a tenuifolia hybrid. There are lots of those around.
