New Peony

I bought a peony root and planted it in my garden. I have never planted a peony from just a root before. I had someone tell me to plant it at least 6 weeks before the cold weather sets in so I got it planted the end of July. I forgot where it was and was transplanting some other flowers in my garden and came across the root and it just looked like a soggy piece of bark. Is it a gonner? I did put it back in the ground...

Your description suggests it is dead. When starting from a mini-root, I prefer to pot it in a one gallon pot so I can have better control of its starting to grow. In the fall when lots of new roots have grown in the pot, is the best time to plant it in the garden, marking the spot. Al
