Pruning sago palm

B PhelpsApril 16, 2012

I have a large 4+ foot tall Sago palm that had not been pruned in some time. When I pruned it, I found many side buds, and one very large one, which I am hesitant to prune.

You can see a picture here:

When I cut this side bud off, should I treat the cut in some way to prevent infection? What product should I use?

Thanks

Brian

cutting off suckers is straight forward. You do not need to put anything on the wound (cycads seal their own wounds with a clear gel that works great). You can usually root suckers as long as they are not super dinky.

Thanks for the input. If you look at the picture

You can see this is not a "sucker" but a very large side-growth.
