Need quick advice on transplanting/holding

ademink(z5a-5b Indianapolis)October 23, 2005

I have a HUGE amount of peonies that I dug up today (got them from a "get them today or they die" location). When I got back to my holding bed, it has rained so much that it's just hard mud - horrible for transplanting! I have nowhere else to temporarily put these peonies until tomorrow afternoon. They are currently in boxes and bags bare-root. Will they make it until tomorrow or am I going to kill them? Any quick thoughts would be much appreciated. BTW, it is sprinkling outside.

They should be just fine until tomorrow. You wouldn't want to leave them sitting out in the sun, but since it's sprinkling, guess that's not a problem :) I'd hate to tell ya the horror stories I've seen peony roots subjected to. They're a lot tougher than most people give them credit for.

I agree they should be fine. I've brought peony divisions up from Pennsylavia to Massachusetts, having to wait almost a week in a plastic bag (in the shade) before I could plant...no problems! So relax.
