A Question about Scent

adaorand(UpstateNY)October 4, 2005

I rescued a hugh peony from a neighbor with Round-Up several years ago. The plant was divided into 12 nice sized clumps and planted up along my fence-line. What a show!!!! They were a very pretty light pink and had the most delicious scent -- like roses. Is this the usual scent for peonies or just for certain varieties? Unfortunately, I had to leave them behind when I moved, and would like to find more for my next garden.

Try a search for Sarah Bernhardt-sounds like that might be the one. Peonies don't all smell like that, but Sarah is a favorite for fragrance.

Thanks. I kinda thought they might be Sarah Bernhardt, but wasn't sure. Their scent was absolutely heavenly, and I'd like to have them again.

Scent varies a lot and some have no significant scent. Like a rose is as good a comparison as any, but the available range is all the way from very light, all through sweet, to heavy musks, and there is fruity, flowery, or spicy to choose from :)
