My poor avocado plant

tplanter(z7a DC)April 21, 2011

Well, my avocado plant is suffering. Living in Boston, it will never be an outdoor plant, but it has sentimental value and I'd like to keep it from kicking the bucket.

I have had it about 5 years. It's about 5 feet tall, but it is leggy and has very few leaves given its size. New leaves keep trying to appear, but they don't last long. The leaves are turning brown and puckering. They also have very little turgor pressure. They are floppy and light green, instead of leathery and dark green. I tried more water, no result. I thought maybe I was overwatering, so I held back - no change. I tried repotting. I tried flushing the whole pot, because it's in a terracotta pot and I was getting white crusty stuff on the outside.

It stays indoors, and doesn't get much natural light, but I leave on artificial light for it. The apartment stays at least 68-70 degrees, though it might be a bit on the dry side.

Ideas?

It's very leggy because it needs LOTS more bright light.

It needs very well drained soil.

Likely it's a root problem. You'll have to look to find out.

Yes, wow. Full sun. Re-pot occasionally. Some heat.
